JUST FOR TODAY

date posted: March 17, 2022

Lucky you, planning a Hudson Valley wedding! Between our own local talent and the neighboring metro area, it’s hard to imagine that there’s anything in the world you can’t rent for your wedding day. A crystal chandelier? Mismatched antique china? Laser tag? Tribal rugs? If you can dream it, someone can help you find it.

Rental companies will be glad to help you choose complementary pieces, but don’t be afraid to let your own sense of style be your guide. If you fall in love with something, chances are your guests will love it, too—this whole celebration is your personal love story, after all.

renting tips:

  • Assess what’s included in your venue’s package. What blanks do you need to fill in with rentals? If you’re not in love with their chair selection, let’s say, most places will allow you to rent and import your own for the day.
  • If you’re renting the basics for a big wedding—tables, chairs, tents—check out the big, long-established event rental companies to see if you can save a few dollars. Devote that leftover money to fun and unique items from an artsy shop with vintage or imported goodies.
  • How about renting some fun? A popcorn or cotton candy machine? (Remember, cotton candy can come in any color you choose, and popcorn bags can be stamped with your initials.) A bouncy house (for kids and adults!)? A green-screen-enabled photo booth offering every sort of romantic background? A vintage ice cream truck? The fun does not have to be limited to what the venue has to offer, so bring it with you!
  • Don’t worry about getting every chair to match. Different shapes and sizes can add visual interest, and you can pull the look together with matching cushions in your wedding colors.

  • Feel free to mix up round and square tables as well. Placing them alternately can be a terrific look. Or do you like long banquet tables? They can make a large room feel like the great hall of a castle..
  • Mixing and matching can also be great fun for china, glassware, and centerpieces. You can pull the look together with table linens, if you like, and layer those in complementary colors and textures for even more visual interest.
  • Many rental companies with collections of unique and vintage items can also give some styling tips. Bring pics to show them your venue and design elements as you browse and consult.
  • Don’t forget the lighting! You may want to supplement or switch out what the venue’s got on hand with candelabras, light strings, or different colors. The right lighting goes a long way in setting the right mood.

rental checklist

Anything your venue or caterer doesn’t supply, you’ll want to rent. Never fear. With rental companies helping, a wedding can be put together anywhere, any way you like.

Tip: Round your numbers up— better to have a few extra chairs or a tent or dance floor that’s a bit too big, rather than too few or too small.
