FLORAL MOODS

by Anne Pyburn Craig

date posted: March 17, 2022

Hudson Valley wedding florists offer a variety of packages and levels of engagement from which to choose. There are places where you can pick your own blooms, places that build you a symphony of flowers to wear and carry—with or without a few decor elements—and still others who will translate your color, venue, and attire choices into a fully realized design theme. There are traditionalists and trend experts and those who specialize in local, seasonal, and organic blooms.

With the right florist, your floral style can flow from your choice of venue, attire, and color palette like a meadow coming into bloom.

With the right florist, your floral style can flow from your choice of venue, attire, and color palette like a meadow coming into bloom. If you’ve been to a wedding where the flowers were especially joyous, find out who the artist was. Check out online portfolios and social media. Read reviews. When you meet with a florist whose work you like, bring along color swatches and photos you find especially inspiring.

Take note of what will be in season at the time of your wedding: Any time from mid-spring to mid-fall, there’s a lot of beauty blooming in this valley, and you’ll be saving money and fossil fuels by incorporating local flowers into your scheme.

Any time from mid-spring to mid-fall, there’s a lot of beauty blooming in this valley, and you’ll be saving money and fossil fuels by incorporating local flowers into your scheme.

Start looking for a florist well in advance; the good ones get booked up. After you’ve reviewed proposals and decided who you’ll be working with, expect to pay a 50 percent deposit to secure your date. Be clear on exactly what’s included: will there be a site visit? Do the florist’s services include delivery, setup, teardown, and removal?

The person you hire to do your wedding flowers should be a good listener who will get your vibe, your taste, and your story, and apply their art and skill to craft your desired enchanted setting. Be as specific as you can about how that looks, smells, and feels.

PERSONAL FLORALS

Gone and unlamented are the days when every blossom in a bride’s bouquet was an alarmingly specific coded message. Feel free to dream up your own personal symbolism, perhaps to be shared on a plaque near an eye-catching floral display that plays with similar elements.

The bouquet toss, should you choose to do one, has been proven to work better with a smaller, lighter bouquet. If yours is large, consider tossing a bridesmaid’s posy. Floral accents for the bridal party can include bouquets, nosegays, floral crowns, or corsages worn at the wrist or waist, along with boutonnieres for those wearing suits.

BEYOND THE BOUQUET

  • A classic, formal venue such as a banquet hall or mansion looks splendid decked out in masses of white blossoms with blue, green, or deep crimson accents.
  • Ultra-modern surroundings look great adorned with piles of blossoms in a monochromatic or two-tone palette. Unexpected elements—grasses, bare branches, cacti—can add thought-provoking flair.
  • If your overall theme is sweetly romantic, it practically begs for the blushing pinks and reds mingled with whites and creams.
  • Take a look around your venue and spot any nooks, crannies, or structural elements like beams or pillars that would look great holding a floral arrangement, garland, sheaf of ornamental grass, crystal vase of purple berries, peacock feathers….
  • Floral centerpieces are lovely, but make sure they don’t block guests from seeing each other’s faces or emit an especially strong fragrance. Consider “floral chandeliers,” or hanging baskets, as an alternative.
  • Have someone gather the florals from your ceremony to repurpose at your reception venue.
  • Floral displays add sweetness to a dessert table (you can even add edible blooms to your cake) and freshen a powder room.
  • Create one or more floral photo backdrops for your guests. Drape garlands around a rustic bench or create a bank of blooms on either end.
  • Delicate bud vases make lovely table decor and party favors.
  • A rustic barn wedding is well suited to loosely gathered floral pieces, earth tones, warm colors, and plenty of greenery.
