Design, Timing, and Etiquette
We’re not trying to tell you what to do here, but even in our electronic age, you can’t go wrong with a good quality cardstock and paper for your wedding correspondence.

Paper feels special. It adds elegance and flair, makes a dandy keepsake, and rules out any possibility of inconveniencing or scandalizing the more traditional guests. Your best allies in this process: a good print shop/stationer and a talented graphic designer. Whichever one you find first, you’ll want to work with someone who has wedding experience—ask to see a portfolio and make sure they’re versed in the importance of the correct timeline and the finer details of wedding-correspondence etiquette. Your designer may be able to lead you to a good print shop—or the other way around, as these professionals often work together.
tips
- Use a logo or insignia that you both love on all wedding correspondence: save the date cards, invitations, RSVP cards, maps, programs, place cards, menus, thank you notes. It can be as simple as your initials entwined, but it will add a sleek, unified feel and help guests keep everything together at a glance.
- If you’re doing a website, include the URL on all correspondence.
- Eco-conscious? Save some trees with recycled paper. Create some new flora with the seed-infused type that can be planted.
timing
- Engagement announcements: As soon as you’re sure! (If you’ve chosen a date, these can double as save the date cards.)
- Save the date cards: As soon as your guest list is finalized. If you’re planning a destination wedding, send these out several months in advance.
- Invitations and RSVP cards: Three months in advance if travel is involved; at least six to eight weeks for a wedding that’s closer to home. Don’t forget to request that RSVPs be returned at least a week or two before you need to finalize numbers with your caterer!
- Maps and schedules: Can be included with your invitations or posted on your website.
- Wedding announcements: Send out the day of the wedding or the day after.
- Thank you notes: Should be sent within two to three weeks after you return from the honeymoon. (Including a fun photo is a nice touch.)

thorny invitation questions
- Must all singles get a plus-one? It’s a nice touch, but if budget, space, or other considerations make it impractical, consider seating all singles together at the reception.
- Should registry information be on the invitation? No. Save any reference to registries for your website and/or to share with friends who inquire.
- No kids? Phrase it as “Adults only” rather than “No children.” Better yet, call your friends with kids and discuss it personally.
- Dress code? Phrases such as “Black tie, please” or “Dress for comfort” are helpful. Beyond that, no matter what your fantasy may be, leave the couture choices up to the guests.
