LOVE IS THE ICING ON THE (WEDDING) CAKE

date posted: March 19, 2022

Cake has been a symbol of prosperity and good fortune since ancient Rome, although both its role and flavor were a bit different. Originally, cakes of wheat or barley were broken over the bride’s head at the conclusion of the ceremony, after which the couple would eat the crumbs together as a symbolic first meal. Sounds a bit bland, to say nothing of the negative impact on one’s hairstyle.

By medieval times, marrying couples had decided that they could get just as much good luck from something a little tastier, and a typical wedding of that era would feature stacks of cookies, scones, and buns; if you could kiss over the tower without it toppling, your union would be blessed with good fortune. Later, meat pies enjoyed a period of popularity; it wasn’t until the 17th century that cakes began to dominate.

Today’s wedding cake is whatever you want it to be, whether that’s a multi-tiered marvel of fondant flowers or a vast array of fancy cupcakes. Jewel tones, metallics, and bright, primary colors splatter-painted on white or black have expanded the palette.

Asymmetrics, architectural details, and flower blossoms add unique flair, and new trends in presentation include a cake swing (yes, a swing for your cake). Choose a design that complements your venue and decor.

more sweetness, please

A dessert table or station can be yet another delightful and memorable feature of your reception, as decorative as it is delicious. The options are practically endless. Ice cream stand with make-your-own-sundae toppings? Towers of cookies and brownies for a sumptuous medieval touch? A tree or wall of whimsical frosted doughnuts? Different flavors of fudge? Individual cups of pudding?

Think about your special childhood favorites and consider incorporating them. Definitely include some gluten-free and vegan choices, along with fruit and cheese. Whatever dessert table you concoct, it should tempt your guests into just one last bite on this special day and leave them feeling perfectly pampered.

baking a memory

A layer of flavorful buttercream under the satiny fondant? Custard filling? Wedding cakes generally cost from $3 to $30 a slice, depending on how complicated you want to get. Beautiful and delicious options can come in simple forms, too: Make the presentation lovely with the perfect table linen, floral surroundings and topper.

This is yet another instance in which the golden rules of wedding planning apply. Begin your search for a baker early—at least six months before your wedding—and start with recommendations and online portfolios, then move to appointments and samplings with the best prospects. Some of the finest bakers anywhere on the planet make their magic here; one of them will be able to create something delicious that makes a statement that’s uniquely you.
