BRIDAL COUTURE

by Anne Pyburn Craig

date posted: March 14, 2020

You want to look fabulous, that’s a given. Happily, in keeping with the overarching “Your day, your way” trend, there are infinite ways to get there. No longer are couples expected to take their fashion cues from cake toppers (which have also become much more diverse). If your dream features a white-on-white ball gown and a tux, have at it! Classics are classics for a reason, after all.

But even within those bounds, there are touches that can stand out and make you feel more you on your special day. And if you’re inclined to be bold, be bold! With all eyes on you, the star of this show, it’s your chance to inhabit your dream-self. If anybody’s shocked, well, a good shock every once in a while is healthy.

consider the possibilities:

• Veils, those lovely bits of translucent romantic symbolism, are making a comeback.

• Trains are being reimagined in new ways to complement modern styles.

• Don’t want to deal with a train? How about a flowing cape?

• Choose a style you love and make it bridal, rather than feeling constrained by what others think is bridal. Off-the shoulder? Handkerchief points? 70s Bohemian? Flapper era? Vintage Hollywood glam? High-low hemline? Renaissance maiden?

• Flowing florals, offering gracious pops of color, are hot this year. Think 3D floral appliqués as accents.

• So are Scandinavian whites with just a blush of color. (Consider a color-blast in the form of an accessory in a corresponding jewel tone.)

• Lace and crochet are looking great this year, as embellishments, panels, or entire garments.

• Speaking of embellishments: there are braids, faux fur, big bold buttons, lacing, sparkling beadwork, scarves, sashes...a whole world of special touches to consider.

• And pockets. Pockets are now very acceptable. No explanation needed.

• Bridal suits with a jacket or blazer look sharp on anyone.
